The role of the geophysicist has evolved beyond squiggles. Today’s geophysicist must be a master of many trades, incorporating geological, petrophysical, and engineering information into their everyday work.
To make this easier, SeisWare developed the Geology Calculator. It sounds simple, but it is a really powerful tool – and one that is not as well known. Here’s a summary of what you should know about SeisWare’s favorite tool that can help you expand your toolkit without the burden of extra work.
The Geology Calculator is a robust calculator that sits on a python engine. The calculator uses curve data, zone, and zone attribute data as inputs; it outputs curves, zones, and zone attributes.
Don’t worry, you don’t have to be a Python tamer to use this tool! We designed the calculator with non-Python users in mind! That’s why we’ve also included examples in the calculator as well as a toolbar that helps explain the functions that we have in the Geology Calculator!
A problem that geoscientists were encountering was that they couldn’t change how the equations work or customize them. SeisWare developed the Calculator so that users could have more flexibility and do more calculations with their data.
There are a lot of things you can do with the Geology Calculator. You can use our predefined calculations, which include (for starters)
We partnered with Ross Crain on these predefined calculations, so you know you are starting off on the right foot. You can also tweak these calculations to your liking or create your own calculations! For example, you can run a calculation using multiple curve inputs, write up IF and ELSE statements, and create lithology zones or lithology curves.
It benefits anyone who wants to do more with their data, whether you are figuring out reservoir characteristics or want to dive more into data analysis with your log curves. The nice part is that Geology connects to Geophysics so that the calculator outputs can be directly integrated with seismic and other data. The Geology Calculator benefits all!
Clients tend to love our Geology Calculator because it has the potential to do a lot of things. It’s easy to write up your own calculations and see what our predefined calculations look like. It’s very open to the user and users know exactly what their calculations are doing.
Because the Calculator sits on a Python engine, that opens a lot of possibilities. For example, you can calculate more advanced statistics in the Geology Calculator. All you need to do is import Python’s statistics module and you’ll instantly have access to different calculations like standard deviation and variance! Clients can find a detailed statistics workflow in our upcoming Workflow Wednesday (just make sure you’re logged into our Support Center).
We hope you love this feature as much as we do. For more information on the Geology Calculator, contact our Sales or Support team.
