Expert Tips for Efficient Workflows
Software features are great – if you know about them. It can be hard for busy geoscientists to keep on top of new developments and sometimes helpful features go unnoticed or unused. We asked our Support Team to share what little-known or underused features all SeisWare users should know about to make their geology & geophysics workflows even better. Here are a few of their answers.
Diana’s Pick: Quick grid and contour from the Basemap
What it is: Just like it sounds – gridding and contouring, which is launched directly from the Basemap. Most of our clients use gridding and contouring, but not everyone knows it can be launched from the Basemap and used for almost anything.
Why it’s great: You can make maps quickly with only a few clicks. You can grid horizons, tops, zone attributes, production, well data, basically, anything that has a number associated with it. It’s quick and you have a gridded surface in seconds.
Marko’s Pick: Manual horizon and grid editing on the Basemap
What it is: A tool to erase and fill in areas of the Basemap.
Why it’s great: Dealing with numbers and algorithms can be tricky. Sometimes it’s way easier to clear out an area with your brush than use polygons and math. It’s super quick and saves time. It’s a great alternative to building a polygon, using a clearing operation, and then a smoothing or fill operation (or however you might like to deal with ugly parts of maps).
“The feature has been around forever in SeisWare but I don’t think enough people use it….and recently the developers added the ‘Save As’ option to output a different surface without overwriting what you’ve already got”, says Marko.
Rob’s Pick: The Coordinate Converter
What it is: A handy application that converts coordinates in bulk. It’s also available for free here.
Why it’s great: It becomes time-consuming to convert data between coordinate systems when dealing with more than just a few points. The large spatial files that geoscientists often work with have thousands of lines. The coordinate converter is great because you can just import entire files and the converter does the rest. It’s fast and easy!
